Safety and control system at Shell LNG stations

IoT project of the year 2021

Problem

Since 1938, Hamer has been providing technical installation and maintenance services in multiple industries in the Netherlands and Belgium. The company’s main activity includes oil and gas companies, like Shell, Exxon, and BP.

Hamer is responsible for the complete installation of Shell’s automated liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel stations. They install LNG tanks, liquid nitrogen tanks, pump skids, dispensers, and the necessary peripheral equipment.

In reality, a driver would accidentally push the emergency button and it would shut down the whole station completely. The system could be reactivated only manually on location which was a nuisance for everyone.

Hamer and Shell were interested in getting a solution that would restart the station remotely and wouldn’t cost a fortune.

Solution

HubLogiQ is a telematics service provider that came up with a fairly simple and affordable idea to install telematics hardware and use Wialon for sending commands and resetting the stations remotely. The solution has been integrated with Hamer’s emergency system.

The provider uses FMB120 trackers from Teltonika. Installed on the site, they are connected to Wialon. The dispatcher staff receives alerts when the emergency button has been pushed.

By getting an alert, Hamer’s back office can right away check the cameras at the station. When the situation is sorted out in accordance with the integrator’s procedures, they can send commands via Wialon and remotely reactivate the system.

Every LNG station is controlled and reset individually.

Result

The solution has been a success, and Shell is thinking about connecting the resting LNG stations to it, as well as leveraging more of Wialon’s functionality.

Remote control

Now reactivating the stations doesn’t require manual work on location (which could be at any of the 60 stations connected). In turn, it saves a lot of time and effort for the dispatchers.

Low-cost investment

The cost of installing the trackers and the one-time setup of Wialon and notifications surprised the client in a good way.

Quick setup and fast results

The solution is quickly started, seamlessly integrated with the emergency system, and generates efficient control over the stations right away.
