The increasing frequency of vehicle thefts forces car-rental and leasing companies to switch from pure GPS-alarms, locking mechanisms, and surveillance systems to “all-in-one” safety & security solutions. How to turn the ultimate GPS tracking system into the effective anti-theft suit? Learn the details from the article.

Experienced market players might have learned the risks through trial and error. If so, they’ve already employed satellite monitoring system to control their assets. Everywhere the clients are the same, and the essence of “rental” is similar, meaning:

  • Maintenance is not your problem
  • The agreement is not to be read, but to be signed
  • Payment terms are flexible and adjusted to your lifestyle

...still, things may get even worse if you face with fraudsters hiring a car only solely to steal it. To address the emerging challenges, Gurtam partners are ready to demonstrate in practice how they take control of unfair customers.

Have no fear – Wialon is here

A car-rental company suffering losses from vehicle thefts addressed our partner “Smart Control Systems” for satellite tracking system implementation. After losing two cars and their recovery far from the region of exploitation, the client already knew the functionality needed to interfere with unfair drivers:

  • Remote engine shutdown
  • Real-time monitoring
  • Historical data to analyze and report
  • In/out geofence control
  • Event-based notifications
  • Mobile app to control vehicle outside the office

“Smart Control Systems” offered the most relevant solution combining “Navtelecom” hardware and Wialon Hosting cloud solution.

According to the established objectives the company used Smart S-2333 device equipped with antennas, built-in configurable accelerometer, impact sensor, and low-current output for command-based channel activation and starter block.

Thus, the key requirement for remote engine shutdown was satisfied. The system blocks the starter based on the emergency command sent manually or automatically upon leaving the specified territory of 50 km around the city.

To control the perimeter, geofences of various shapes and types were created in Wialon system. If a rental car leaves the specified area, the system blocks the engine and notifies a dispatcher on the emergency situation via pop-up, e-mail, and browser notifications.

Thanks to the above, the rental company is now able to pursue the emerging issues at their root. As a result, not a single vehicle theft since Wialon implementation.

First results

“Smart Control Systems” provided more than just an anti-theft suit but a business-specific solution addressing a variety of challenges:

  • High-tech platform for real-time tracking and precise analytics  dozens of units controlled by a single specialist.
  • Maintenance scheduling by days, engine hours, and mileage  timely preventive maintenance and no critical breakdowns.
  • Towing notification  no need for a client to visit car impound.
  • Functional mobile app  24/7 control in and outside the office.
  • Hardware flexibility  special installation practices for the vehicles to remain under warranty.
  • Stable cloud solution  cut costs on server acquisition and administration.

Still, extended Wialon functionality allows to achieve more: detain vehicle wear and cut insurance costs by controlling driving quality and engine hours; prevent spare parts theft by controlling hood opening; detect the vehicles on demand to adjust the schedule of rates; view driver information in the monitoring interface, and much more.

Using Wialon to the full extent? You definitely have something to tell us about. Share your case story at Gurtam blog and make it recognized worldwide. Contact us at, and we’ll make your project sound!
