We’re excited to share that on October 29, Wialon introduced a health check for telematics hardware. This initial release (MVP) lays a strong foundation for proactive hardware maintenance in Wialon, incorporating core functionalities that analyze tracker behavior and sensor readings.

Health check is more than just a tool — it’s a strategic advantage that will bring lasting value to service providers and fleet owners.

With this functionality, our partners will be able to:

  • Detect potential device issues early and respond promptly, minimizing downtime and maintaining consistent operations.
  • Lower hardware replacement or repair costs for fleet owners by enabling preventive maintenance before vehicles hit the road, thus avoiding unnecessary expenses like dispatching staff to remote locations when breakdowns occur during trips.
  • Earn trust and loyalty in the market by providing more reliable service.

Keep reading to learn more about the new functionality already available in Wialon and how our partners can help shape its future development.

Why early detection of hardware issues matters

There is no doubt that properly functioning trackers and sensors are essential for effective fleet management. They ensure reliable data transmission and smooth operations for both service providers and fleet owners.

However, even the highest-quality device isn't immune to occasional failures. When there is no dedicated system to monitor hardware performance, service providers might only notice a malfunction after it disrupts data transmission or vehicle performance. By then, it's often too late: the device has already stopped working properly, crucial data may be lost, and the fleet owner is frustrated.

Meet the Wialon health check feature

With the Wialon health check feature, it’s a whole different story: service providers and fleet owners can gain insights into device status and proactively analyze any deviations from normal behavior, spotting potential issues before a malfunction affects business operations. With immediate insights at their fingertips, they can make informed decisions and act swiftly — whether it's scheduling hardware maintenance or sending a technician to inspect and repair a device.

The new functionality is now available as an MVP. It includes:

  • A predefined, fixed set of criteria for devices with the option to select the monitoring time intervals.
  • A rule-based system that automatically categorizes each vehicle into one of three statuses based on its device’s performance: “Unhealthy,” “Healthy,” or “Needs attention.”
  • Data displayed as a dashboard chart, with additional charts for specific criteria.

The initial release allows our partners to test-drive the proactive device maintenance capabilities.

Requiring minimal additional settings, the health check functionality helps effectively identify hardware issues early on and resolve them at minimal cost. It focuses on various criteria that assist in pinpointing potential problems with devices, including:

  • Battery level: helps identify trackers that need charging, which is particularly relevant for asset trackers.
  • External voltage: assists in detecting issues with the vehicle's battery.
  • No messages from devices: indicates problems such as SIM card balance issues or tracker malfunctions.
  • No GPS data: points to possible tampering with the GPS antenna or device malfunction.
  • Fewer than 4 satellites: suggests incorrect installation of the GPS antenna or issues with the device's GPS receiver.
  • Distance between messages more than 100 km: may indicate incorrect device configuration.
  • No changes in fuel data: draws attention to potential issues with the fuel sensor.

Once the parameters are set, Wialon continuously analyzes this data in real-time. If any anomalies are detected — such as low battery voltage or no changes in fuel data while the car is moving — the system flags the vehicle with the affected device as "Needs Attention" or "Unhealthy."

This information is displayed in a color-coded chart on the dashboard, with a detailed breakdown by specific criteria, so that service providers or fleet owners can easily assess the status of each unit based on its devices' behavior.

Real-time data allows service providers and fleet owners to make informed decisions and take quick actions, such as scheduling hardware inspections or dispatching a specialist.

Our ultimate goal with this new release is to help our partners anticipate potential concerns and prevent device issues before they become costly problems. Meanwhile, Wialon partners’ clients will also appreciate the benefits, such as continuous fleet monitoring, reduced expenses, and greater peace of mind.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." What has always been true for regular exercise and a healthy diet now equally applies to telematics hardware maintenance, thanks to Wialon’s new health check feature.
