Fleet management platforms are often evaluated on their ‘visible’ capabilities: features, pricing, integrations. But once thousands of active vehicles are connected to the platform, one factor becomes the absolute foundation for everything else: reliability.

Reliability is never just an abstract IT metric. When the fleet management solution goes down unexpectedly, the impact is felt instantly. Dispatchers lose track of routes, high-value cargo becomes vulnerable, and solution providers face high-pressure inquiries from fleet owners.

The level of availability they can expect from their software vendor is defined in a Service Level Agreement (SLA). This, in turn, underpins the commitments they make to every fleet that relies on their services.

At Wialon, system stability is the foundation our partners build their businesses on. That's why reliability has never been just a checkbox or a baseline for us — it is a core engineering priority. 

Features and interfaces are easy to compare. It’s much harder to judge how a system will perform at scale over the years, and harder still to build one that performs reliably. For more than 20 years, Wialon has operated without data loss or prolonged, multi-hour outages. That comes from years of engineering work, resilient infrastructure, continuous monitoring, and processes that have been tested and improved along the way.

In this article, we'll walk you through how we measure Wialon’s availability, what our uptime figures actually mean, and what happens behind the scenes to keep Wialon running reliably every single day.

SLA and actual uptime: Understanding the difference

Every SLA defines a minimum level of service availability a software provider commits to delivering. Wialon’s SLA guarantees a minimum availability of 99.5%, which technically allows for up to 3 hours and 39 minutes of downtime over the course of a calendar month.

This is a common industry benchmark that leaves room for rare events no software provider can fully control, such as large-scale network disruptions.

In practice, Wialon’s availability is significantly higher. We continuously refine our engineering processes to stay way above the standard SLA threshold, and our historical data reflects this focus. In 2025, across all global data centers and zones, Wialon’s actual average uptime was 99.984%.

To put that into perspective: on average, individual Wialon components experienced less than 7 minutes of disruption per month. Hitting this level of availability is an achievement indeed. It places us in the same high-tier category as premium cloud infrastructure and global banking networks, where staying online is an absolute must.

How we track Wialon’s health in real time

To give our partners an unfiltered, real-time look at Wialon's operational status, we integrate our infrastructure with Better Stack, a globally recognized monitoring platform. While many companies report uptime based on internal measurements, status.wialon.com is powered entirely by this independent external service, providing a direct window into how our servers are performing across different continents.

Status

If Wialon isn’t working as expected, status.wialon.com is the first place to check. It shows the status of the entire cloud infrastructure, including individual data centers, web and API access, and incoming data from devices, and databases. You’ll also find information about planned maintenance and current and past incidents.

For a more personalized view, partners can use the status widget in my.wialon.com. Wialon runs across several physical data centers, with each partner account hosted in a specific data center and connected to one of its databases. The widget filters the information automatically, showing only the components relevant to that account.

Here is exactly how Better Stack handles tracking and incident logging:

  • Automated checks every 30 seconds: Better Stack monitors whether users can access the web interface, messages from devices are reaching the database, and Wialon data is available through the API. These checks run every 30 seconds.

  • Multi-region verification: Better Stack checks monitored services from multiple independent locations by default. This helps reduce false positives: a local connectivity issue in one region is less likely to be mistaken for a platform-wide incident.

  • Automated incident logging: If Wialon fails two checks in a row, meaning it hasn’t responded for a full minute, Better Stack automatically opens a public incident. It appears on the status page right away, without waiting for someone to create it manually.

  • Manual updates when additional context is helpful: Not every issue results in an outage. Occasionally, Wialon is fully operational, yet certain features respond more slowly than expected. In those situations, our engineers may publish an incident or status update to keep partners informed, even if automated monitoring hasn't detected a service interruption.

How uptime is calculated

Wialon's uptime follows Better Stack's standard availability methodology. For each calendar month, uptime is calculated as the percentage of total service time during which monitored services remain available.

In simple terms:

Uptime = (Total service time − Downtime) ÷ Total service time

If upcoming work may affect Wialon availability, we publish the details on status.wialon.com beforehand, including the timing and the affected part of the infrastructure. Partners can also follow updates there while the work is underway.

Reliability goes beyond monitoring

Monitoring helps us detect and communicate issues quickly. But reliability starts much earlier. It's shaped by the way Wialon is designed, the way we build new features, and the way we run the infrastructure every day.

For more than 2 decades, our engineering teams have been evolving Wialon, refining its architecture, improving performance, strengthening security, and preparing it to handle huge volumes of telematics data.

Infrastructure designed for uninterrupted operation

We host Wialon in top-tier data centers in the US and Europe using Tier III infrastructure —  the level commonly used for business-critical systems (e.g. banks, telecom operators) that need to stay online around the clock.

Here's how it works: the workload is distributed across multiple servers. If one needs maintenance or unexpectedly goes offline, the traffic is routed to other servers, keeping Wialon  running as usual.

24/7 infrastructure monitoring

Wialon’s InfraOps engineers monitor the infrastructure around the clock. When a server, database, or network component starts behaving abnormally, they trace the cause, identify what is affected, and act to prevent a disruption or limit its impact if it does occur.
